The Advanced Test is designed for any qualified driver who is looking to develop their driving.
The full test package is a customized programme that contains three elements.
What the test entails:
The examiner will firstly put you at ease. There will be an initial document check and Eyesight test and then a visual inspection of your vehicle to ensure that it appears roadworthy. Following an eyesight check from at least the minimum legal distance given in the Highway Code, you will be invited to comment on the type of vehicle you will be driving including an overview of its condition.
While the driving time will be approximately 90 minutes, you should allow a minimum of two hours for the test. All instructions given will be clear.

is tailored to meet your individual needs.
To reflect varying traffic conditions, all routes will consist of a wide variety of different road types. Your examiner on the day will choose one or all three reversing manoeuvres.
The examiner also has an option to include an emergency stop exercise.
Your test is assessed using risk and hazard perception and not driving faults.
A risk is normally assessed where you put yourself or another road user at risk, or increase the chance of a crash happening.
These are assessed as minor risk, serious risk or dangerous risk.
A minor risk is where a situation is judged to not involve any potential danger at the time it occurred. Where a pattern of behaviour could cause a road accident this will be judged as more serious.
A serious risk is where a driving error is judged to have caused unnecessary inconvenience to another road user involving potential danger.
A dangerous risk is a driving error that is judged to cause actual danger.
Your examiner will assess the risk element of the circumstances. For instance, no risk would normally be attributed to a candidate crossing their arms when steering, providing the car is being well controlled. If, however, you increase the risk of a rear end shunt by using the gears to slow down and braking late in general driving situations, then a level of risk will need to be determined.
Throughout the body of the test, candidates are assessed on their capabilities in managing risk in a variety of different and constantly changing road and traffic conditions.
At the end of the test the instructor will talk you through the faults identified and provide detailed feedback on the performance.
All sessions should take place in your own car and you should check with your insurer that this is allowed. This will enable the sessions to be as close to normality as possible and not give you the added complexity of dealing with a different car. If you would prefer that the session took place in the instructors vehicle please discuss this at the time of booking.
