So you think you want to become a Driving Standards Agency Examiner? Let us help you on the way! Part of the selection process to gain entry to the examiners course is taking a theory test and a driving test. Once you have completed your application form, and the DSA are satisfied that you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be invited to a nearby theory test center to take a theory test, which includes a hazard perception test. The theory test consists of a multiple choice section which is then followed by a hazard perception test, which features 14 film clips containing 15 developing hazards. Candidates have to identify the hazards as they appear on screen. If you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, you will be given the opportunity for a second test. However, you are only allowed two attempts. If you are successful in this test you'll be invited to do the Special Driving test. A Supervising Examiner (SE) will conduct this test. You will be expected to drive at a speed consistent with road and traffic conditions without any serious fault. You might want to have a lesson or two with a Professional Driving Instructor prior to taking the drive, who will know what standard is needed. Before you are taken out on the road by the SE, you will be required to pass a basic eyesight test, you will be asked to read a number plate at a distance of approximately 90 feet. Please be aware if you can not successfully complete this exercise, the Special Driving Test will not go ahead. Should you be successful at this point there will be a formal interview. The panel will usually consist of 2 people; a local management representative and a senior examiner or a Human Resources representative. Don't go it alone and fail this drive, if you fail this test you will go no further.
